What Size of Moving Truck You Need for Moving House

If you are moving house without the help of professional movers and do not have a large vehicle or a truck yourself, you will need to rent a moving truck. There are a few things to do before renting a moving truck.

  1. Make a List of What to Move

The first thing you need to do before renting a moving truck is knowing all the stuff you want to put them into it. Make a list of stuff you want to move, starting from larger stuff like couches, cupboards, beds, etc. to the smaller stuff such as books and clothes. By making a list like this, you make the whole process of estimating the size of the truck easier.

Ensure that the list you made is filled with all the stuff you need to move only, not those you will leave behind. You may need to sort all your stuff far before your moving day and get rid of those that you will not need in your new house. You may give those you do not need away or sell them online. If you have decided to sell them online, make sure to put the sale online at least 7 weeks before your moving day. That way, you could sell them all before the D-day.

  1. Estimate the Size of the Truck

After making a list of the stuff to move, you need to estimate the size of the truck you want to rent. Commonly, there are 5 types of truck you may rent: 10’, 14’, 17’, 24’, and 26’. 10’ truck has the capacity of a studio or a small 1-bedroom apartment. 14’ truck has the capacity up to 2 bedrooms. 17’ truck has the capacity of a house with 3 bedrooms. 24’ truck has the capacity of a house with 4 bedrooms. 26’ truck has a capacity of a house with 6-7 bedrooms.

Please keep in mind that the capacity is not fixed on that number. There are other factors that may influence the estimation. Please make a reference on the list you have made. Discuss your list with your rental agency to find the right size for your moving truck.

Rent a Slightly Larger Truck

Always rent a slightly larger truck in case you miscalculated the estimation. Renting a slightly larger moving truck can prevent some problems that may occur on the moving day. Like how some stuff may need extra space and how you may forget to include some miscellaneous stuff into your list. Renting a slightly larger moving truck will let you put all your stuff in it securely. Also, in doing so, you will not need to leave some stuff behind or make several trips from your old house to the new one because the moving truck you rent is too small.

However, don’t rent a moving truck that is too large in which you will leave some space unfilled. You don’t want to spend extra cost for something you do not actually use, do you?
